Getting started
From faceoff to first goal.
How do I play?
Score the most goals in a five-minute period. You control the gold-ringed home skater. Skate into rivals to body-check them and strip the puck; aim with the cursor and shoot where you point. A tie goes to sudden-death overtime.
What are the controls?
On desktop:

On phones, touch controls activate automatically: a left thumb-stick skates and a right thumb-stick aims and shoots (or taps to check when you don't have the puck).
What are big hits and fights?
Hit power scales with your skating speed — a full-speed charge hits far harder than a standstill shove. Every fifth hit is a big hit (watch the Big Hit Meter in the HUD), and big hits start a fight: a best-of-five quick-time event where you press the flashed key within 1.25 seconds. Win it for a speed and shot-power boost for ten seconds.
Online & ranked
How do the online modes work?
Pick Solo (1v1), Duo (2v2), or Team (3v3) under Play Online and we pair you with other players — first to five goals. Your result moves your PVP rank on the leaderboard.
What's the difference between ranked and casual?
A match is ranked (it moves your ELO) only when every seat is filled by a real player. If the population is low and empty seats have to be filled with AI, that match plays as casual and your rating doesn't change.
How do I play with a friend?
Choose Challenge a Friend to create a private match and get a 6-character code — share it, and they enter it to join. It uses whichever mode you picked online.
Is the leaderboard fair?
Yes. Online play is server-authoritative: a Cloudflare Durable Object runs the one true simulation and streams it to every player, and only the server can change your rating — so there's nothing on your device to cheat.
Matchmaking is slow or I can't connect.
Online play needs an internet connection; check yours, then try again — during quiet hours there may simply be fewer players in the queue. If it keeps failing, email us with your platform and the time it happened and we'll look into it.
Devices & privacy
What can I play Hockeyium on?
It runs in the browser and as a native app on iPhone and Android (built with Capacitor). Quick Play against the AI works offline; online modes and the leaderboard need a connection.
Do I need an account?
No. There's no sign-up and no password — just pick a display name. Your rank is tied to an anonymous identifier stored on your device.
How is my data handled? How do I delete it?
Only your display name, an anonymous identifier, and your ELO / win-loss record are kept for online play; there are no ads or trackers. Clearing your site data or uninstalling removes the local data, and you can email us to delete your leaderboard record. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.
